Fermented black bean umami with a sweet ginger plot twist.
Should you get the Oo’mämē Chinese Szechuan Chile Crisp? Short answer: if you like sesame and fermented black bean, probably yes — with one warning label.
The taste test
It’s very crunchy, with a lot going on in the jar: fermented black beans (the same umami engine we love in Fly By Jing), plenty of chili flakes, and sesame seeds throughout. If sesame-forward jars are your thing, this one’s for you.
The warning
There’s crystallized ginger in here, and it’s genuinely a little sweet — mostly subtle, but there are bigger chunks that can catch you off guard mid-bite. We don’t mind it; some people will. Know before you buy.
Price
Here’s the fun part: it’s around $18 on their site but roughly $9 on Amazon, which moves it from “premium gamble” to “low-risk experiment.” At the Amazon price, it’s an easy recommendation to try.
Verdict
A tier. Crunchy, umami-rich, slightly sweet, well-priced if you buy it right. Not the jar we reach for first, but one we’re never sad to have open.
Best on
- rice
- noodles
- stir-fry
Skip it if
- sweet chunks surprise you — the crystallized ginger is real
